you post a photo on the internet, you cann't stop it from failling in the wrong hands, so i guess it's allowed

You can try to use a watermark.

There isn't really any rule that forbids such an act. However you may do as @Melancani suggested and add a watermark / trademark in your image to prove the origin of that image.

There's no specific rule that you cannot take someone's avatar, but for the sake of formality, a permission should be essential. Just think of it as a fan. Some people place their name in it too.
